CALLIGRAPHY: Introduction to the Uncial
Hand
Uncial was the first pen-written alphabet and dates from
4th century Ireland. This workshop will introduce you to the secrets of
the classic edged pen and basic construction of these majestic letterforms.
Playful variations will provide the opportunity to create colorful, contemporary
decorated letters that can stand as monograms or be combined with other
scripts for richness of expression. Beginners and lefties welcome.

DEVICES & DESIRES: Writing Your Own Words
for Calligraphy, Mixed-Media and Book Arts
Words belong to everybody. Their combinations and arrangements make
them mean something original and personal. Do you want to write your own
words? In this workshop you will explore dozens of ways to generate content.
You will play with poetrys key elements -- imagery and rhythm --
and learn how to express them verbally and visually. In the process, you
will discover that language is a pliable, living substance full of surprises
that can be mined and shaped into a personal voice of wit, memory and
celebration. Beginners welcome.
